Hurricane Season Midway Check-In

We’re halfway through hurricane season — there’s still time to make sure your family is ready. This is especially important if you have young children at home.

Before the Storm
Get your kids involved by letting them help pack the family emergency kit. Be sure to include:

  • Important papers: Birth certificates, medical and insurance records in a waterproof folder.

  • Comfort items: Favorite toys, books, or stuffed animals to help your child feel safe.

  • Everyday needs: Diapers, wipes, clothes, blankets, and pillows.

  • Food and drinks: Bottled water, boxed juices, and non-perishable snacks.

  • Safety supplies: Flashlights, batteries, bug spray, sunscreen, and a weather radio.

  • Special needs: Medications, medical equipment, or anything your child uses daily.

  • Evacuation info: Learn local evacuation routes and keep a copy in your kit.

During the Storm
If you need to leave home and go to a shelter, hotel, or a friend’s house, the toys and games you packed can help your kids stay calm. Stick together and remind them you’ve planned ahead to keep everyone safe.

After the Storm

  • Stay informed: Listen to local news for updates and safety instructions.

  • Reassure your kids: It’s normal for them to feel nervous or scared. Remind them how prepared your family is.

  • Find support: If anyone needs extra help coping, reach out to local counselors or health professionals.
