Preparing for a New School Year

As summer winds down, it’s time to start getting ready for a new school year. This fresh start is a big moment for the whole family, and a little preparation can go a long way in helping your child feel confident and excited.

Talk with your child about what to expect. Use simple words to describe where they’ll go, who they’ll meet, and what they’ll do during the day. If possible, visit the classroom ahead of time or attend an open house so your child can meet their teacher and explore the new space.

Books are a great way to ease into new experiences. Try reading The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn or I Am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child to help your child understand what school is all about.

It’s normal for children to feel a mix of emotions like excitement, nervousness, or even fear. Give them space to talk about their feelings and let them know it’s okay to feel that way. With your support, they’ll grow more comfortable over time.

Many early learning programs in Florida start in August, so start thinking about ways you can help your child feel proud, excited, and ready for the new adventure.
